Thomas Stiegler is a Policy Officer at the German Federal Foreign Office. In his current posting, he focuses on the European Union’s next strategic budget 2021-2027 and the EU financial architecture for global challenges including SDGs. Prior to this, he spent four years in China – first as a Chinese language student at the Beijing Foreign Studies University (2012-13) and subsequently as a researcher - completing a Ph.D. on EU-China human rights diplomacy at the University of Hong Kong (2013-2016). There, he also worked as teaching and research assistant in European Studies and chairman of a postgraduate student association. He studied International Relations in Bruges (College of Europe), Dresden and Mexico. He is a member of several alumni associations including the German National Merit Foundation and the Hong Kong Swire Scholars Association. He currently organises an SDG-conference connecting alumni associations of the German Academic Exchange Service for Sub-Sahara Africa, India and his own China. He speaks Chinese (HSK 5), French and Spanish and enjoys sports, traveling and playing the piano.
