Dr Joachim Thraen is a Director of Governmental Affairs at UBS AG based in Zurich, primarily focusing on key international regulatory and political issues of relevance to UBS. He is also a lecturer at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland, where he teaches a course on the hard and soft power elements of Chinese foreign policy. Previously, he worked at the German Foreign Office, responsible for coordinating German cultural and communication relations with China, Japan, the Korean Peninsula and Mongolia and as a management consultant at Bain & Company in Zurich. Joachim Thraen received a PhD in management from the University of St. Gallen with a thesis on innovation management in China and holds an MA in International Affairs from the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy in Boston and a BSc in Economic History and Economics from the London School of Economics. Having lived in China for two years, he has become acquainted with China's development, culture and language and is particularly interested in Chinese foreign policy and economic history, and more recently in China's Belt and Road Initiative. Joachim enjoys sports, traveling, playing the piano and spending time with his wife and children.
