Xifan Yang is the Beijing Bureau Chief of the German weekly newspaper DIE ZEIT. She was born 1988 in Hengyang, an industrial city in the Southern Chinese province of Hunan and grew up in Freiburg im Breisgau in Germany. Later on in Munich, Yang studied psychology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University. After an apprenticeship at the German School of Journalism in Munich, internships at the Asia office of the weekly Stern in Shanghai and the youth magazine NEON in Munich, Yang moved to Shanghai in 2011 to work as a freelance China and Asia correspondent for German-language media. In 2015 she published her first book "Als die Karpfen fliegen lernten" (Hanser Berlin), a story of the last hundred years of recent Chinese history told through the eyes of her family members. In 2016 and 2017 Yang worked as an editor at Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin in Munich. She joined DIE ZEIT in early 2018.
